Retail - Categories
Overview
Product categories help you organize your retail items so staff members can easily browse and find what they’re looking for. Categories also improve navigation and make managing your inventory simpler behind the scenes.
What are product categories?
Product categories are groups used to sort similar products together. For example:
- T-Shirts (by sizing)
- Drinks (bags, socks, belts)
- Equipment (gear, tools, supplies)
You can create categories that match how your business is structured.
How to add a product category
To create a new category:
- In Admin, go to Retail > Categories
- Click the + New button in the top right corner
- Set the Name for the category
- Optionally, add a picture for the category under the Media panel
- Click the Save button
How to assign a product to a category
Once a category exists:
- In Admin, go to Retail > Products
- Create a new product, or open an existing product
- Under the Category section, you can select the appropriate category in the drop down list
- Click Save
You can assign a product to only one category.
Editing or deleting categories
To update an existing category:
- Go to Categories
- Select the category you want to change
- Update the name or settings as needed
- Save your changes
To delete a category:
- Open the category
- Select Delete
- Confirm deletion
Note: Deleting a category will not delete the products inside it. Products will simply become uncategorized.
Best practices and Notes
- Keep category names simple and easy to understand
- Use consistent naming (e.g., “Apparel” instead of mixing “Clothing” and “Wearables”)
- You cannot create a sub-categories
